Getting Healthy

I've been telling myself to get healthy for a while now. And I mean a while. But it just never seems to happen. A few days after the new year started, I decided to just shut up and do it. I don't know if it's just my new year's resolutions speaking (everyone always seems to diet at the beginning of every year) or if this will actually last, but so far I'm feeling great!

Each morning when I wake up, I do a Jillian Michaels workout DVD called Ripped in 30. It's a 25 minute workout that you're supposed to do pretty much every day for 30 days, and there are four different workouts (one for each week). I'm still on week one, but I can already feel myself gaining more endurance and strength.

On top of my daily workout, I've been trying to really cut out junk food and other unhealthy choices in my diet. I haven't had a soda since the new year started, and I'm slowly weening myself off of sweets! I'm eaten a lot more salads and a lot less pizza/burgers. I'm also trying to avoid going out to eat but almost no restaurants are that healthy.

I'll be sure to keep my blog updated with my progress, mostly because that will give me the motivation to actually do it. Here are my goals for this workout journey:

Starting weight: 133 lbs
Goal weight: 120-125 lbs (I don't have a specific number I have to reach)

Do you have a new workout/diet plan for the new year?
Comment and let me know :)

  2. You're 133 pounds? You're not overweight! But I can understand your desire to be a better you. Also, I want to eat healthier and cut out sweets too. I've been looking at paleo.... -Jessica L

  3. Congrats on making it 9 days into January with your resolutions Shelby! As a dietitian, I see many people start out well but give up because they set unrealistic goals such as NEVER eating burgers or pizza. You've done such a smart thing by saying you'll eat less, so keep it up! (And have fun with the Ripped in 30 DVD, I'm to embarrassed to do workout DVDs at home.... )

  4. I'm going into the new year with a greater focus on not eating junk food often and exercising more--just a generally healthier lifestyle, no plans to lose weight specifically...good job on getting this far in! I've heard about that "ripped in 30" course before, it sounds tough!

  5. I've been seeing some of Jillian Michaels DVDs, and I contemplated getting one, but I didn't really know anything about it and I hadn't looked into any reviews yet. But this one looks cool!

Congrats on what you've done so far! I'm in the same boat, just trying to get in shape and get moving since I mostly just sit around at a computer all day for class. Good luck with all of it!

  11. I'm following Weight Watchers (sometimes I feel like my mother ;-)). Their program is really cool because you can go crazy and eat a cheeseburger or a bag of Cheetos if you have one of those moments ... it gives you room to screw up, but is really based on changing your lifelong eating habits, so it works well for me.

I struggle with incorporating regular exercise into my life's routines because things gets so crazy and it's one more thing to juggle, but I might give Jillian a look. I know it's a hugely important component.

Also, just wanted to say great work ... I love your blog :-) I'm a high school English teacher, so seeing the quality and commitment present here is wonderful. Keep it up :-) xx
