Thoughts on Miss America

I don't typically post about things like this, but after watching the Miss America pageant on Sunday, I feel like I should. Every year, I watch the Miss America pageant in January as yet another beautiful woman is crowned. People say that the organization is a good thing, and I totally understand their point. Miss America is a role model for young girls. She has a platform and a cause that she stands for. She receives college scholarship money to further her education. She travels the country for a year representing women everywhere and visiting charities and organizations. I get it! But why is it that we have then parade around the stage in evening gowns and bikinis to choose who that winner will be? Why do these women spend hours working out, getting waxed, going tanning, buying dresses, doing their nails, and painting their faces with makeup in order to dance on stage for the title? This makes no sense to me.

Pageants in general make no sense to me to be totally honest. The show Toddlers in Tiaras is disturbing to me, and I would never put my child through that. I believe in women who are educated, strong, and independent. Women who are leaders. I believe in respecting yourself enough to look decent every day, but I also believe that you should not go overboard on your outward appearance. You don't need five pounds of black eyeliner to look beautiful. I realize I have posted a few times about this before (see posts here and here), but it's simply my personal opinion. Love yourself, walk with confidence, and never hide that you're a strong, intelligent woman just to get a guy's attention.

Okay, I'm going to step off my soap box now. Again, I don't normally go on rants about things, but today I just felt like putting it all out there! Feel free to leave your thoughts and opinions below. :)

  1. The Miss America Organization is so much more than what you see on stage. As a former Miss Texas contestant I learned so much from my years of service and made some of my best friends. It gave me poise, grace, style and confidance to go to law school and get any job I wanted. The point of swimwear and evening gown is to show a committment to health and beauty and poise. These young women spend hours perfecting everyone from talent to their bodies, but they also spend hundreds of HOURS performing community servicer and giving back to their state and communities. This organization is also the largst provider of scholarships to women! LIke $45 million each year.

  3. I never quite get pageants, either. I just don't like the idea of everyone having to invest so much time and money into making themselves look good with fake hair and done-up faces--aren't we pretty enough already?
I gotta say, though, I wouldn't mind having the chance to wear such gorgeous evening gowns! :)

  4. I'm not a fan of the children in the pageants either....because of what we see so many times with parents going overboard and children losing their opportunity to enjoy their childhood.

I agree with you, we need to find a way to love ourselves through our own inner beauty and intelligence. I do think that many of the women in the pageants display these qualities but unfortunately many also have self esteem issues and eating disorders. = (

  5. I agree with everything you said. I think Miss America has some good sides of it, but you have to be drop dead beautiful to compete which mean average gals like me can't compete. But I'm just a smart & compassionate as these ladies.
It's just based on looks & then they make it into something positive. But I agree, these people do go overboard with their looks.

  6. Pageants are hard to form an opinion on. Because on one end, some of these girls are in pageants for money to further their careers or life dreams. And the other end, there are girls who are just in it because they look good. It does exploit the appearance of women, at the end of the day, but I guess if that is the life they choose for themselves.

  7. yes i would have to agree with you. i think the morals/goals they were originally set for have totally changed.
i do HATE that show on TLC. It just opens your eyes to what people will do for a trophy and $300...
